MindWorks Collaborative is recognizing Chanae` Jones, MOTR/L during this week’s OT Diversity Spotlight. She is the proud owner and occupational therapist at Dreamcatchers Therapy and Wellness Services, PLLC in Houston, TX. Here, she and her team provide pediatric, adult, and geriatric clients and organizations with occupational therapy, health/wellness, and life management services and consulting support. Prior to opening her private practice, Chanae’ worked in school systems, outpatient rehabilitation, abuse/mental health centers, and community programs.

A native from Breaux Bridge, LA, Chanae` proudly claims her Louisiana Creole heritage. Her families mixed identity privileged her to be raised in a home speaking English, Creole, and French. She leverages her multicultural background and her personal experience as an at-promise youth in her volunteer work within the AOTA Multicultural, Diversity, and Inclusion (MDI) Network, her community service work with the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, and in her daily professional work as an culturally competent occupational therapist. She notes that Houston is a melting pot of cultures and languages and so she supports her diverse team in delivering culturally competent therapy to their clients. She has witnessed first hand the impact race, poverty, and language can have on a person’s access to high-quality therapeutic services. These experiences prompted her to pursue a doctorate in Public Health to improve her capacity to be an advocate for marginalized communities.

Please join us in celebrating the future Dr. Jones for her hard work and dedication in building safe and supportive spaces for diverse practitioners and families and for being a multicultural asset to the OT field! Read more about her below:

When did you start working in OT?
I have worked as an occupational therapist for the 7 years

Why did you choose to become an Occupational Therapist?
When I was a junior in undergrad my grandfather suffered a stroke. As part of his recovery plan he received OT services. It was my first introduction to the profession and found it interesting so I decided to pursue a career in it.

Can you share a bit about what makes your job so rewarding?
My job is rewarding because I enjoy helping others. My main focus is pediatrics because I love seeing the faces of children light up when they achieve even the smallest of things.

How would you describe a good day at work?
For me, a good day is any day that is beautiful! A bonus is having 6 to 7 sessions throughout my day with children all making progress on their therapy goals.

Anything else you would like to share about your job/experience of working in OT?
Occupational therapy is an unique field. You can help people at any stage of their life and in any setting. This profession allows you to help your clients improve their daily functions. Plus it really allows you to be directly invested in the community. Often people say it takes a special person to work with children with special needs but I am honored to be in their lives to see them grow and achieve their goals daily.
